Golf Cart Maintenance What to Know About Batteries

  • Repair News
  • Aug 15, 2023

Proper golf cart maintenance is key to ensuring longevity and performance. And since the batteries are the lifeblood of your electric golf cart, remember to do the following:

  1. Regular Charging: Charge your batteries after each use, even if you’ve only traveled a short distance. Avoid letting them fully discharge, as this can shorten their lifespan.

  2. Charging Habits: Plug in your cart as soon as possible after using it. Allowing batteries to sit in a discharged state can lead to sulfation, a condition that can harm battery performance.
  3. Complete Charging: Ensure your batteries are fully charged before using the cart. Partial charging can cause a buildup of sulfation, decreasing their overall capacity.
  4. Water Levels: For carts with lead-acid batteries, check water levels monthly. Keep the water level above the battery plates, but avoid overfilling, as excess water can lead to corrosion.
  5. Cleanliness: Keep battery terminals and connections clean, as corrosion can hinder the flow of electricity.
  6. Storage: If you aren’t using your golf cart for an extended period, store it with fully charged batteries. Consider disconnecting the batteries to prevent slow discharge.
  7. Replacement: Golf cart batteries typically last around 4-6 years. Keep an eye out for signs of declining performance, such as reduced range or slower speeds. When it’s time to replace them, choose high-quality batteries.
  8. Professional Maintenance: Schedule regular golf cart maintenance. They perform load tests and voltage checks to ensure your batteries are functioning optimally.
